La Ville d’Étampes souhaite doter le quartier de la Croix de Vernailles d’un nouveau centre social incluant un accueil de loisirs. Actuellement dispersé sur trois sites, le centre ne répond plus à la fréquentation croissante et aux besoins des habitants. Lieu de rencontre, d’accompagnement et d’activités pour les familles, adultes et jeunes, il constitue un espace essentiel de lien social.
Le terrain retenu se situe au nord-ouest du quartier, sur les coteaux, en bordure d’un espace vert arboré offrant des vues dégagées. Le projet s’éloigne du centre actuel du quartier pour s’implanter en lisière, accessible depuis le boulevard de Montfaucon.
L’architecture proposée vise à dialoguer avec le paysage tout en affirmant une identité forte. L’organisation en bandes programmatiques s’adapte à la topographie : le parking relie les constructions voisines, tandis que les volumes bâtis s’ouvrent vers le quartier à l’est et le paysage à l’ouest. Cette composition génère un parvis accueillant, directement relié au boulevard.
Le bâtiment, partiellement inscrit dans le sol côté ouest, s’élève progressivement vers l’est. Construit en maçonnerie de béton brut apparent, il évoque un « rocher » émergeant du terrain, dont la teinte adoucie souligne l’intégration paysagère.

The City of Étampes plans to provide the Croix de Vernailles neighborhood with a new social center including a leisure facility. Currently spread across three different sites, the existing center can no longer accommodate the growing number of users or meet their needs. As a place for community life, support, and activities for families, adults, and young people, it plays a key role in fostering social ties.
The chosen site is located in the north-west of the neighborhood, on the hillsides, at the edge of a green area with trees and open views. The project moves slightly away from the current central location to a border position, accessible from Boulevard de Montfaucon.
The architectural design aims to integrate with the landscape while standing out as a recognizable landmark. A system of programmatic bands adapts to the topography: the parking area connects with the existing buildings, while the built volumes open eastwards to the neighborhood and westwards to the landscape. This layout creates a welcoming square directly connected to the boulevard.
The building is partly embedded in the ground on the west side and gradually rises towards the east. Constructed in exposed raw concrete masonry, it resembles a “rock” emerging from the soil, its softened tones reinforcing its integration into the landscape.
